There are two ways to paint with Gouache, one is to use Designers Gouache (a premixed opaque watercolor) and the other is to create it yourself by mixing a bit of white to your color to add some opacity to the color as you paint. I have used both on occasion. For the first two small paintings on this post I used the second method mixing zinc white gouache in very small amounts. I was trying to minimize the effect on color value while adding only a bit of solidity.

For this third painting, in the shade of the Crepe Myrtles, I used a combination of watercolor and both forms of Gouache. I was sitting in the shade of the umbrella when I painted this piece. One of the bits of advice to make living in the South tolerable is “Never stand in the sun when you can sit in the shade!”
Finally, I’ld like to leave you with this bit of inspiration I lifted from Facebook.
