From the Edge of Normaltown…a guessing game
This small construction site along Alps Rd. in front of Krogers is proceeding along and I like to stop by and visit it painting, sketching and taking photographs.
It’s evolved into a guessing game. Once upon a time the first thing that went up at a construction site was a sign that said something like: Future Home of…. Now you’ll know the bank that finances it; the contractor and most of the subcontractors but you won’t find out what the building is going to house until it is ready to open.
One thing that marks the change and growth of a town is the amount and types of construction that goes on. Athens has always had a lot of construction and reinventing throughout it’s history and owes a great deal of this to being the home of the University of Georgia.
Athens actually became the home of UGA because the other candidate, Watkinsvile (a town about 15 miles away) had a tavern and Athens didn’t.
Growing up in Athens we used to say: “The best thing about Athens was the University and the worst thing about Athens was the University.”
Let me know what drives your town’s growth and construction.
And I still don’t what they’re building in front of Krogers.
